Black Watch 42nd Highlanders Sgts KC Glengarry Badge

This is an interesting WW1 period badge. It was owned by a Sgt in the Black Watch and he had this version constructed by a local jeweller from three of his old service badges. Defines the history of his service WW1 – 1902 – 1926 period with King’s crown. White metal and brass glengarry badge with two back lugs.

The 42nd (Royal Highland) Regiment of Foot was a Scottish infantry regiment in the British Army also known as the Black Watch. Originally titled Crawford’s Highlanders or the Highland Regiment and numbered 43rd in the line, in 1748, on the disbanding of Oglethorpe’s Regiment of Foot, they were renumbered 42nd and in 1751 formally titled the 42nd (Highland) Regiment of Foot. The 42nd Regiment was one of the first three Highland Regiments to fight in North America.In 1881 the regiment was named The Royal Highland Regiment (The Black Watch), being officially redesignated The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) in 1931. In 2006 the Black Watch became part of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.

A Sporran is a pouch (Scottish Gaelic for ‘purse’). Now a decorative part of Highland dress, it was originally an everyday  practical item. Made of leather or fur, it usually has more or less elaborate silver or other ornamentation, especially on the clasp or hanger. It is worn on a chain or belt around the waist, allowing the sporran to lie below the waist of the person wearing a kilt.

Fine Scottish antique sgian dubh with thistle design and a thistle top. Black wood carved hilt. In good used antique condition some minor pitting on the blade and a small 2mm dent on scabbard ( see photos ).

Thomas Kerr Ebbutt was a Scottish manufacturing jeweller, St David’s Square, Edinburgh. Thomas Ebbutt started work in 1896 and died in 1921. From the beginning he concentrated on making Highland Dress accoutrements. His company continued in business until 1977 when it was bought by Hamilton & Inches. His sgian dubhs are highly prized and respected for their beauty & high quality.

Despite this practice, a small twin edged-dagger, (‘Mattucashlass’), concealed under the armpit, combined with a smaller knife, (‘Sgian dubh’).

Wonderful Clan Young Kilt Badge hallmarked Sterling silver with 18ct gold plating bonnet badge with motto ‘Sola Nobilitas Virtute’ and silver Armigers eagle feather.

Made by Hamilton & Inches, Edinburgh hallmarked – date letter C 1977 Jubilee year

Armigers

A person who has registered his or her own coat of Arms and Crest, or inherited these according to the Laws of Arms in Scotland from an ancestor who had recorded them in the Lyon Register, may wear their own Crest as a badge:

  • either on its Wreath, Crest Coronet or Chapeau,
  • or, as is more usual, within a plain circlet inscribed with his Motto.

An armiger may also choose to wear instead the Crest badge of his Chief if the armiger is a clansman. An armiger is entitled to one silver eagle’s feather behind the plain circlet, and if he is also a Peer he may add his appropriate coronet of rank on top of the circlet.
