The Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, The Duke of Albany’s) was a historic line infantry regiment of the British Army, mainly associated with large areas of the northern Highlands of Scotland. The regiment existed from 1881 to 1961, and saw service in World War I and World War II, along with many numerous smaller conflicts. In 1961 the regiment was amalgamated with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders to form the Queen’s Own Highlanders (Seaforth and Camerons), which merged, in 1994, with the Gordon Highlanders to form the Highlanders (Seaforth, Gordons and Camerons).

Scottish Provincial Silver
Despite laws instructing goldsmiths to send their wares to Edinburgh (and later Glasgow) for hallmarking, many silversmiths from the burghs of Scotland enjoyed sufficient independence from the assay office to use local marks. They did this to avoid the perils of travel and (after 1784) to escape paying duty in a region where a healthy disdain for the Hanoverians persisted well into the 19th century. There were some 30 different centres of silver production recorded, from Arbroath, Perth, Aberdeen, Elgin to Wick. Their legacy is an extraordinary array of silver town and makers’ marks that have intrigued collectors for more than a century.
The best-known Victorian collection of Scottish provincial silver was amassed by nobleman and liberal politician Gavin Campbell, 1st Marquess of Breadalbane (1851-1922), and it was his extensive holdings which formed the main reference for the (often inaccurate) Scottish sections in Sir Charles Jackson’s first edition of English Goldsmiths and Their Marks in 1905.

Far back in the history of Scotland, the earliest settlers told legends about wildcats so fierce they bested human champions, and worshipped them as forest spirits. Centuries later, clans formed together under the image of the wildcat and fought wars for the independence of the land. Today, as few as 100 remain in the wild, and the extinction of Britain’s last large mammal predator could come within the next few years. Kennedy Clan History – The family originated from Ulster and are descended from Duncan of Carrick who lived in the 12th century. The first mention of the name is that of Gilbert Mac Kennedi who witnessed a Charter from the lands of Carric in the reign of William the Lion.

John Kennedy of Dunure was in situ at Cassilis in 1360 and his son, Sir Gilbert, was a hostage for the release of David II from English custody three years earlier. Gilbert’s son James married Princess Mary Stewart, daughter of Robert III, and their son, another Robert, was created Lord Kennedy in 1452. His brother James (1408-65) was Bishop of Dunkeld and Archbishop of St Andrews.

David, 3rd Lord Kennedy, was created Earl of Cassilis in 1502 and died at the Battle of Flodden eleven years later. The 2nd Earl was murdered by Sir Hugh Campbell of Loudon, Sheriff of Ayr, from whom he had unsuccessfully attempted to rescue James V. The 3rd Earl was poisoned in France on his return from the marriage of Mary Queen of Scots to the Dauphin in 1558.
