Kennedy Clan History – The family originated from Ulster and are descended from Duncan of Carrick who lived in the 12th century. The first mention of the name is that of Gilbert Mac Kennedi who witnessed a Charter from the lands of Carric in the reign of William the Lion.
John Kennedy of Dunure was in situ at Cassilis in 1360 and his son, Sir Gilbert, was a hostage for the release of David II from English custody three years earlier. Gilbert’s son James married Princess Mary Stewart, daughter of Robert III, and their son, another Robert, was created Lord Kennedy in 1452. His brother James (1408-65) was Bishop of Dunkeld and Archbishop of St Andrews.
David, 3rd Lord Kennedy, was created Earl of Cassilis in 1502 and died at the Battle of Flodden eleven years later. The 2nd Earl was murdered by Sir Hugh Campbell of Loudon, Sheriff of Ayr, from whom he had unsuccessfully attempted to rescue James V. The 3rd Earl was poisoned in France on his return from the marriage of Mary Queen of Scots to the Dauphin in 1558.

In 1526 the title of Earl of Sutherland and chieftenship of the Clan Sutherland passed by right of marriage to Adam Gordon who was a younger son of George Gordon, 2nd Earl of Huntly.
Later during the Anglo-Scottish Wars, George Gordon, 4th Earl of Huntly defeated an English army at the Battle of Haddon Rig in 1542 but the Gordons were later part of the Scottish army which was defeated at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh in 1547.
The Gordons fought on both sides during both the Jacobite rising of 1715 and the Jacobite rising of 1745. In 1715 the fighting force of the Clan Gordon is given by General George Wade as 1000 Claymores. The second Duke of Gordon followed the Jacobites in 1715 and fought at the Battle of Sheriffmuir.
Jacobite rising of 1745 – Cosmo Gordon, 3rd Duke of Gordon supported the British government during the rising of 1745. However, his brother, Lord Lewis Gordon, raised two Jacobite regiments against the Hanoverians. The Gordon Jacobites fought at the Battle of Inverurie (1745), the Battle of Falkirk (1746) and the Battle of Culloden (1746).
British Army Regiments – Two regiments named the “Gordon Highlanders” have been raised from the Clan Gordon. The first was the “81st” formed in 1777 by the Hon. Clan Donald, also known as Clan MacDonald is a Highland Scottish clan and one of the largest Scottish clans. The Lord Lyon King of Arms who is the Scottish official with responsibility for regulating heraldry in that country, issuing new grants of coats of arms, and serving as the judge of the Court of the Lord Lyon, recognizes under Scottish law the High Chief of Clan Donald. Historically the chiefs of the Clan Donald held the title of Lord of the Isles until 1493 and two of those chiefs also held the title of Earl of Ross until 1476.
There are also numerous branches to the Clan Donald and several of these have chiefs recognised by the Lord Lyon King of Arms; these are: Clan Macdonald of Sleat, Clan Macdonald of Clanranald, Clan MacDonell of Glengarry, Clan MacDonald of Keppoch, and Clan MacAlister. There are also notable historic branches of Clan Donald without chiefs so-recognised, these are: the Clan MacDonald of Dunnyveg, Clan MacDonald of Lochalsh, the MacDonalds of Glencoe, and the MacDonalds of Ardnamurchan. The MacDonnells of Antrim are a cadet branch of the MacDonalds of Dunnyveg but do not belong to the Scottish associations and have a chief officially recognised in Ireland.

Clan MacEwen or Clan MacEwan is a Highland Scottish clan recorded in the fifteenth century as Clan Ewen of Otter.
Historically, there have been several different MacEwen clans and septs, with some distinct, and some interrelated, origins for the modern surname. Each of these historical clans could be described by the name, “Clan MacEwen” or, at times, “Clan Ewen”. The modern clan does not yet have a chief recognized by Lord Lyon King of Arms, and as such is currently considered an Armigerous clan. However, as of 2018, Clan MacEwen has an elected Commander, Sir John McEwen, 5th Baronet of Marchmont and Bardrochat, who is in line to become the first Chief since the death of Swene McEwen, in 1493.

This is a very difficult clan surname to prove the precise origins, it may be Scottish, it may be Irish, or it could be Gaelic. The Scots regard MacKechnie as a member of the Clan MacDonald, the most numerous and prosperous of Scottish clans. This is quite possible as MacDonald is recorded in a bewildering variety of spellings including McConile in 1571, Mackoneye in 1586 and M’Kconil in 1597 amongst the many wonderful examples of how to spell the name MacDonald!
