A Sporran is a pouch (Scottish Gaelic for ‘purse’). Now a decorative part of Highland dress, it was originally an everyday  practical item. Made of leather or fur, it usually has more or less elaborate silver or other ornamentation, especially on the clasp or hanger. It is worn on a chain or belt around the waist, allowing the sporran to lie below the waist of the person wearing a kilt.

Simple day sporrans have been made from leather and deer skin. Semi dress sporran and Dress sporrans developed with a wide range of available furs. From simple sealskin which was common around the coasts od Scotland, to Eurasian otter, badger, pine marten and Scottish wildcat. Many of these species are now rightly protected species and we feel these vintage sporrans have to preserved for history. The Scottish regiments had a long history of horsehair sporrans in a wide range of designs depending on rank and regiment.

The mid Victorian to Edwardian period became the heyday of the fine goat hair dress sporran and today these are still much sort after. So sort after that we still hand craft goat hair sporrans often using vintage sporran cantles.
