Clan Cameron is a West Highland Scottish clan, with one main branch Lochiel, and numerous cadet branches. The Clan Cameron lands are in Lochaber and within their lands lies Ben Nevis which is the highest mountain in the British Isles. The Chief of the clan is customarily referred to as simply “Lochiel”.

Central to the Clan Cameron crest are five arrows, “united” with one another with a gules ribbon or band.  This crest goes back to before 1745, when it supplemented the old “dexter arm” crest (which was still used interchangeably with the Five Arrows into the mid-twentieth century.  These two crests, and their mottos on the surrounding strap, may be used by clansmen to denote their clan affiliation.

Vintage 1930 – 40’s Clan Fleming Glengarry Badge

Clan Fleming badge with motto  “LET THE DEED SHAW” (SHOW).

Crest: A goat’s head erased Argent, armed Or

The surname Fleming is derived from the French, le Fleming, which indicates that the family originated in Flanders. The once powerful medieval principality of Flanders is now split between Belgium, the Netherlands and France. During the latter part of the twelfth century the Flemish were enterprising merchants who traded with England, Scotland and Wales. A distinguished Flemish leader named Baldwin settled with his followers in Biggar, South Lanarkshire under a grant of David I of Scotland. Baldwin became Sheriff of Lanark under Malcolm IV of Scotland and William the Lion and this office appears to have been hereditary for some time.

Our range of fine hallmarked sterling silver skean dubh’s made by the Highland regimental silversmith and Royal silversmiths Hamilton & Inches in Edinburgh, Scotland.  We can engrave many of these skean dubhs for presentation gifts.

The Gaelic sgian dubh meaning “black knife”, where “black” may refer to the usual colour of the handle of the knife. It is also suggested that “black” means secret, or hidden, as in the word blackmail. This is based on the stories and theories surrounding the knife’s origin and the meaning of “Dubh” in Gaelic, in particular those associated with the Highland custom of depositing weapons at the entrance to a house prior to entering as a guest. Despite this practice, a small twin edged-dagger, (‘Mattucashlass’), concealed under the armpit, combined with a smaller knife, (‘Sgian dubh’).
