1860-80’s Antique Scottish Silver Agate Buckle Bracelet

1860-80’s Antique Scottish Silver Agate Buckle Bracelet

An excellent example of an antique Scottish agate bracelet with unmarked engraved silver buckle and fixings. In lovely condition as can be seen in the photos. The fine natural Scottish agate stones show their natural grain within. With classic carnelian banded agate from near Cupar in Fife and brown and white banded agates from Scurdie Ness on the east coast. Scottish agates are a strong mineral sometimes known as ‘ Earth Rainbow ‘ due to the wide range of colours that can be seen in the stones.

This fabulous Scottish Sterling Silver Agate bracelet is genuine Victorian Circa 1860. The agate jewellery was made popular by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert following her trips to Scotland in the 1850-60’s and her purchase of Balmoral Castle.

The clasp is engraved with a floral design and in in great working order. Measures 22cm to fit 17.5cm – 20.5cm ( 7″ – 8″ ) wrist Full length approx 23.5cm = 9″

The Atholl Highlanders is a Scottish ceremonial infantry regiment. The regiment is not part of the British Army but is in the private employ of the Duke of Atholl, and based in Blair Atholl

The regiment was originally raised in Perthshire by John Murray, 4th Duke of Atholl as the 77th Regiment of Foot (or Atholl Highlanders, or Murray’s Highlanders) in December 1777.

More than 50 years later, in 1839, George Murray, 6th Duke of Atholl, as Lord Glenlyon, resurrected the regiment as a bodyguard which he took to the Eglinton Tournament at Eglinton Castle, Ayrshire. Three years later, in 1842, the regiment escorted Queen Victoria during her tour of Perthshire and, in 1844, when the Queen stayed as a guest of the Duke at Blair Castle, the regiment mounted the guard for the entire duration of her stay. In recognition of the service that the regiment provided during her two visits, the Queen announced that she would present the Atholl Highlanders with colours, thus giving the regiment official status.

Duke of Rothesay (Scottish Gaelic: Diùc Baile Bhòid, Scots: Duik o Rothesay) is a title of the heir apparent to the British throne, currently Prince Charles. It was a title of the heir apparent to the throne of the Kingdom of Scotland before 1707, of the Kingdom of Great Britain from 1707 to 1801, and now of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is the title mandated for use by the heir apparent when in Scotland, in preference to the titles Duke of Cornwall (which also belongs to the eldest living son of the monarch, when and only when he is also heir apparent, by right) and Prince of Wales (traditionally granted to the heir apparent), which are used in the rest of the United Kingdom and overseas. The Duke of Rothesay also holds other Scottish titles, including those of Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, Lord of the Isles and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland.
